It takes just eight minutes from the valley station in Parcines for the Aschbach/Rio Lagundo cable car to reach its destination and yet the top and bottom stations are located in two different worlds. At the top of the cable car, at 1,486 metres above sea level, there is none of the daily stress that we are used to down in the valley. As you step out of the cable car you are struck by the incredible calm, by the heady mountain woodland odours, by the stunning panorama of the Dolomites that stretches as far as the eye can see and by the pristine natural environment that is so sought after by nature lovers. Undoubtedly, Monte San Vigilio, situated directly above Lana, is one of the most idyllic destinations around Merano and the fact that its pure natural environment is off limits for all vehicles makes it an even bigger draw. The natural environment has been able to remain unspoiled due to the onvenience of the cable car which was built in 1912 and so this year celebrates its centenary.
