General description

A fantastic alpine tour to the double peak between the Val d’Ultimo and the Val Venosta with a breathtaking panoramic view

This very attractive mountain tour, technically not difficult for hikers accustomed to the mountains, but demanding in terms of physical condition, rewards with the two fantastic, crystal-clear "Covolo/Kofelraster" mountain lakes and the summit traverse at "Gran Ladro /Hoher Dieb" (2,730 m).

The journey to the starting point of the tour is by public transport (train of Venosta Valley). Therefore we have to start punctually from the hotel. Ascent and descent with chairlift "Malga di Tarres/Tarscher Alm" (fee required).

From the starting point by the alpine hut "Malga di Tarres/Tarscher Alm (1,940 m) we follow trail no. 15 in a southeasterly direction up to the open areas below the Hochjoch. Across rocky alpine grassy sections with fragrant alpine flora, the path leads in moderate steepness always in an easterly direction, until we reach the "Gran Ladro/Hohe Dieb-crossing point at an altitude of about 2,600 m. From there we reach the beautifully situated and crystal clear lakes "Covolo/Kofelraster" via a short descent (200 meters in altitude). On the "Ulten side" we first reach the summit of the Ulten "Gran Ladro/Hoher Dieb" (2,712 m) with a beautiful summit cross, shortly afterwards ( approx. 500 m distance)  the Vinschger "Gran Ladro/Hoher Dieb" (2,730 m), both viewpoints of the extra class. Now we descend taking essentially the outward route back to the alpine hut "Malga di Tarres/Tarscher Alm", where we can stop and strength ourselves with a good meal. Very rewarding views of the Ortler group, the Ötztaler Alps, the two alpine lakes, the Venosta/Vinschgau valley.
