Our hotel is a place where you can travel consciously and become part of a sustainable and responsible movement. Together, we show how we use resources so that they will last for many generations. The selection is carefully made by ‘Change Maker Hotels’, more specifically by Robert and Petra, and admission is only granted after a two-day audit.
11 criteria for why Change Maker Hotels make the world a better place.
We love sharing our home near Merano with people like you: open-minded, positive and with an appreciation for nature and the people of the region. In the valley of apple orchards, they have used their eye for design and their passion for biking to create a place where you might stumble across a white giraffe between the sky pool and the vegetable garden.
Timeless design, sustainable thinking: ‘Christiane has an eye for beauty, and every year we completely redesign four to eight rooms,’ says Boris as we walk through the house. No two rooms are alike: one has a freestanding bathtub with a view of the garden, another has an outdoor shower with a mountain view on the balcony, and another has a bed under a skylight. Here, a column divides the room; there, the sink moves into the living room. ‘We like to be creative and flexible and see what our guests make of it.’ Natural materials are important, and wherever possible, they are recycled or upcycled, turning old into new. The minimalist steel shelf? A creation by Boris, implemented by a local locksmith. Just like all the renovations and designs, which are created in collaboration with local craftsmen. People tried to talk him out of the distinctive façade made of untreated larch – common in Christiane's home region, the Bregenz Forest. ‘Ugly and grey? No way! You don't have to cover everything in chemicals just because that's how it's always been done!’
‘That crazy giraffe!’ Boris nudges the animal designed by Italian designer Marcantonio, which Christiane absolutely had to have ;) It welcomes guests at the reception with a golden chandelier in its mouth. ‘Christiane fell in love with it and just had to have it.’ At the Design Hotel Tyrol in Rabland near Merano in South Tyrol, joie de vivre reigns supreme. The joy of being, of creating, of giving meaning and of daring to try new things. Christiane and Boris live here in the small bike and boutique hotel with their two children. You won't find ties and high heels here, but cycling shirts and hiking trousers are the outfit of choice. "For us, it's about having a good time together, about the excitement of discovery and relaxed togetherness."
We are happy to send you out to discover the surrounding farms and alpine pastures. We want you to experience the region and get to know the people. Dinner can therefore be booked flexibly at any time. We want a lively region with alpine huts, taverns and shops. ‘To maintain this infrastructure, we as hoteliers must also give our guests the opportunity to go out.’ The new ‘Tavolata by the pool’ format is intended to break with convention: ‘We want to have a communal meal where everyone sits at a large table in the garden. Friends, locals, guests.’ Yet another opportunity for exchange and encounters.
